Traumwein Berlin
At the weekend, I visited David, whom I met at the WSET courses. David has decided to give up his maths studies and dedicate himself to wine.
Perhaps all the factors came together at the same time and it was a good fit: dropping out of university, the old wine shop that was rented in his parents' premises closing its doors and a passion for enjoyment (who doesn't?) led to the decision to go full throttle.
A small, fine wine shop in Prenzlauer Berg. You can immediately see what you can buy - wine, by the case. David made the shelves himself from Euro pallets, and the crates standing around make you want to take one home right away. You can see David's commitment to sustainability and a short distribution chain. He has really got going since the decision was made six months ago. David wants to sell wine for the people, wine that everyone can afford and that tastes good. He proudly presents his assortment. Among others, from Loewen and Steinmetz on the Mosel or Stodden from the Ahr, Côtes du Rhône's from Perrin or D'Angelo from Apulia.
Do you specialise?
Mainly German wines, yes. I also have a small selection of French, Alsatian and Italian producers in my range.
Do you think your customers like that?
I think so. I go by the modern principle, "buy local". I don't buy anything from overseas, for example, because I don't think it's necessary to make my ecological footprint unnecessarily large. I buy directly from the producer, the price-performance ratio is right, and customers come back for that very reason.
How will the 2015 vintage be?
Always good with a sensible winegrower.
White wine in winter?
(...) Definitely. Spätlese! e.g: The Trittenheimer Leiterchen 2004, from the Milz-Laurentiushof winery.
Monday to Friday I drink?
As a customer, I drink what I enjoy most, e.g. the 180° Riesling from Milz-Laurentiushof or a Côtes du Rhône from Perrin.
At the weekend with friends?
I love to drink a Cartizze. That's what you drink with your good friends.
So let's go to the dream wine and try it. Maybe you'll end up in a jam session, because the guitar is ready. Will David sing?
