Weingut Schmelzer BergWerk 2018
Natural wine, amphora, sulphur? I have to admit, it has become a bit quiet on legoutduvin, - and the wine world, on the other hand, has continued to turn. So fast and exciting that I feel an urgent thirst to discover everything exciting that lies ahead.
I discovered this wine in a small, fine natural wine shop here in Hamburg, and had to buy it immediately. Something immediately appealed to me when I saw this bottle. The archaic nature of a clay bottle, the logo, the writing? I had to have it, - and I had to open and taste it the same evening. And I am so thrilled!
But perhaps first: what kind of wine is this anyway?
Well then. Cabernet Sauvignon from wild vines, harvested by hand and aged untouched for 332 days directly in Qvevre (the amphorae, .-> Georgia, -> you know...) buried in the vineyard. Without sulphur, without anything. And yet with everything it needs.
The Schmelzer winery is located in Gols, on Lake Neusiedl, and works according to biodynamic guidelines, --> Demeter certified. The first sip, fresh, fruit, full, - and tannins. But not at all obtrusive. However, they discreetly push themselves into the foreground, step aside again and make room for the fruit, exchange themselves. Freshness again, then again with pressure. Always powerful, vigorous, thoroughly self-confident, its own identity, life. The effect manifests itself right at the front of my forehead, as if something pushes itself up from the shallows, takes you in and thrills you!
A good wine is a wine that occupies me, whose history and production fascinate me, that is complex and I can always discover something. A wine that will remain in my memory.
And this is definitely one of them. Thank you dear Bagalutes. To be continued...
Of course, this chapter still needs to be told. What is it about the wild wine, what does the winery look like, and what do the Schmelzers' other wines taste like? I'll stay tuned and report back!
